WK2 L1 Visual processing Flashcards
receptive fields
area over which stimulation can increase or decrease a neurons activity
orientation tuning
a neuron will fire maximally when presented with it’s preferred direction. As the orientation of the stimulus moves away from the preferred direction, the cells activity will gradually decrease
organization of v1
Ocular dominance columns, blobs, orientation columns
Ocular dominance columns
cells that process info from either the left or right eye
blobs
cells that are sensitive to colour and finer details
orientation columns
cells that are sensitive to the same orientation
Lateral geniculate nucleus
the nucleus in the thalamus that recieves input from the optic nerve and sends fibers to the cortical receiving are for vision
LGN purpose
groups info and smoothes it out
ganglion cells
edge detectors
scotoma
region of blindness or redcued sensitovity in the visual field
hemianopia
a visual field defect - that affects half of the visual field
spatial frequency
the number of cycles in the grating per degree of visual angle
