Wk14 - Lab Terms Flashcards
activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT)/partial thromboplastin time (PTT)
a blood test that measures the time it takes the blood to clot
alpha-fetoprotein
a blood test used to check the alpha-fetoprotein level in a pregnant female (to check spina bifida and Down syndrome)
amylase
measures amount of amylase in the blood
antinuclear antibodies (ANA)
a test that measures the amount and pattern of antibodies in the blood
B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP)
a blood test that measures BNP, a substance secreted by the ventricles of the heart
basic metabolic panel
a group of 7-8 lab tests that measures different chemicals in the blood. i.e. calcium, carbon dioxide (bicarbonate), chloride, creatinine, glucose, potassium, sodium, urea nitrogen (BUN)
blood urea nitrogen (BUN)
blood test that measures urea/waste levels
C-reactive protein
a blood test used to screen C-reactive protein which is a marker for systemic inflammation
carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA)
blood test that measures levels of CEA protein
cardiac enzymes
a blood test that measures levels of troponin (increase with MI), creatine kinase (CK-MB, high levels with MI). When the heart muscle is damaged, these proteins leak into the bloodstream
complete blood count (CBC)
a blood test used to measure the number of white blood cells (WBCs), red blood cells (RBCs), and platelets. Hemoglobin and hematocrit levels also included in a CBC.
complete blood count (CBC) with differential
a CBC where the percentage of the total of each type of WBCs is determined
comprehensive metabolic panel
group of blood tests that measure kidney and liver function. The blood tests commonly included in a comprehensive metabolic panel are albumin, bilirubin, calcium, CO2, chloride, etc…
creatinine
a blood test used to measure creatinine, a waste product or normal muscle activity excreted by the kidneys
electrolytes
a blood test that measures minerals in the body that help to maintain fluid levels and acid base balance. Includes sodium, potassium, bicarb, and chloride
Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)
blood test used to diagnose allergies
Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR)
blood test to measure inflammation levels within the body; “sed rate”
glucose
a blood test that measures blood sugar levels. A FBS (fasting blood sugar) requires the patient to fast 12 hours prior to testing
glucose tolerance test (GTT)
A blood sugar test given at specific intervals after a person is given glucose (usually in the form of a high glucose drink)
hematocrit (Hct, HCT)
a measure of the % volume RBCs, WBCs, and plasma
hemoglobin (HGB, Hgb)
hemoglobin is a protein in RBCs that carries oxygen
hemoglobin A1C (A1C)
a blood test that measures a person’s blood sugar control over the past 3 month period
hemoglobin and hematocrit (H&H)
blood test that measures hemoglobin and hematocrit levels to screen for anemia
HIV antibody
performed 3 to 6 weeks after exposure
human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)
used to check for the hormone hCG
international normalized ratio (INR)
a method of standardizing the results of prothrombin time (PT) tests, regardless of the testing method or lab where the test is performed
lipid profile
a blood test that usually includes the following 3 tests: low density lipoprotein (LDL) (bad), high density lipoprotein (HDL) (good), and triglycerides.
liver (hepatic) profile
a group of tests that screen for liver disease or inflammationl
lymphocytes (lymphs)
a type of white blood cell that is included in the differential count of a CBC
microalbumin
a urine test used to detect small amounts of albumin in the urine
monocyte (mono)
type of WBC
occult blood test (hemoccult)
occult = hidden. This test is performed to find the presence of blood in the feces
packed red blood cells (PRBC)
RBCs that are collected and stored for future use in blood transfusions
PAP smear
(Short for Papanicolau) a sample of cells are taken from the cervix and then examined under the microscope
partial thromboplastin time (PTT)
a blood test that measures the time it takes the blood to clot (intrinsic system and common components)
pathology (patho)
the study of (the cause of) disease -or- the part of a lab that examines body tissues to assist in determining a diagnosis
potassium (K)
urine test to measure potassium levels
prostate-specific antigen (PSA)
a test that measures the level of PSA, a protein from the prostate gland in men
prothrombin time (PT)
a blood test used to determine how fast blood clots (extrinsic system and factors common to both systems)
red blood cell (count) (RBC)
blood test that measures levels of RBCs
staphylococcus (staph)
blood test that determines the presence of a staph infection
stool culture
evaluation of a fecal sample to detect infection within the digestive tract
streptococcus (strep)
blood test that determines the presence of a strep infection
sweat test
a test to determine the level of chloride concentration in sweat
thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)
a blood test that measures the level of TSH (TSH is secreted by the pituitary gland and controls the thyroid)
thyroxine (T4)
blood test that measures thyroxine levels
triiodothyronine (T3)
blood test to measure thyroid function
uric acid
blood test to measure uric acid levels
urinalysis (UA)
examination of the physical and chemical characteristics of urine (i.e. color, appearance, specific gravity, pH, presence of protein or sugar, blood)
