What is the trade name of a drug?
The name given by a company to make and sell the drug. Eg. Panadol, neurofen, dispirin
What are some examples of trade names of a drug?
Panadol [Paracetamol], Neurofen [ibuprofen], Ventolin [salbutamol], Dispirin [aspirin]
What is the other name for the ‘Trade name’ of a drug?
‘Proprietary’- this means ownership by a company
What is the generic name of a drug?
A simplified version of the chemical name of a drug which is often used by HCPs. Eg. Salbutamol, morphine, aspirin, paracetamol
What are some examples of generic names of drugs?
Paracetamol, Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Salbutamol, Fluoxetine

Describes the chemical structure of the drug compound
What are the 3 different types of names we can use to describe a drug/medication?

What is the a) Signal Word & b) Definition, of a SCHEDULE 1 drug?
a) Signal Word- SCHEDULE 1= UNSCHEDULED
b) Definition- These are substances not requiring control by scheduling
What are some examples of ‘SCHEDULE 1’ drugs/substances?
SCHEDULE 1- Antacids, baby formula, vitamins, herbal remedies

a) Signal Word- SCHEDULE 2= PHARMACY MEDICINE
b) Definition- These are substances available to the public from a pharmacy. [Note- Smaller doses of S2 meds are available in shops- eg. 20x paracetmol from Woolies, 100x paracetamol (S2) from pharmacy]

a) Signal Word- SCHEDULE 3= ‘PHARMACIST ONLY MEDICATION’
b) Definition- Drugs available to the public only from a pharmacist, medical, dental or veterinary practitioner

SCHEDULE 3 [Pharmacist Only Medication]= Salbutamol, Cough & Cold with Pseudoephedrine, Adrenaline (EpiPen), GTN, Naloxone

a) Signal Word- SCHEDULE 4= ‘PRESCRIPTION ONLY MEDICATION’
b) Definition- Available only with a prescription from a medical or dental practitioner (plus some specially trained nurses, podiatrists & optometrists). All NEW drugs are also initially scheduled as S4
