Wk1 Chemistry Flashcards
atomic number
Number of protons
4 types of matter
Solids-resist change in shape and volume
Liquids- fluids that exhibit minimal compressibility
Gas- fluids that are compressible and change volume with changes in pressure/temp
Atomic theory
Central core-nucleus which contains protons (positive) and neutrons (neutral)
With orbiting electrons (negative)
Oncotic pressure
The osmotic pressure exerted by plasma proteins and electrolytes in capillaries to prevent hydrostatic pressure tendency to push water out of capillaries
Ficks law
Diffusion is proportional to pressure, membrane solubility and area. Inversely proportional to membrane thickness and molecular weight
Henrys law
Pressure of a dissolved gas is equal to the pressure of that gas above the liquid (even though the concentration may change)
Grahams law
Rate of effusion is inverse to square root of molecular weight….. small molecules diffuse faster
Le Chatelier’s Principle
Everything strives to be in equilibrium
Tonicity
How solute concentration impacts cell volume- think isotonic (no change in cell volume)
Osmolarity
Number of osmoles per liter of solution
Osmole
1 mole of any substance dissolved in water
Mole
Cute blind mammal
Amount of a substance- used to convert between mass and number of particles
