What is sterilisation
Process that kills all living micro-organisms including spored
What is disinfection
Kills as many organisms on an item as possible with the exception of high numbers of bacterial spores
CSSD, TSSD, HSSD
Cleaned, prepared, processed, stored and distributed
Thermal sterilisation
Steam under pressure
Raise temperature to kill heat resistant bacteria and spores
Re-evaporation of condensation must effectively dry items
EO sterilisation
Chemical alkylating agent that kills micro-organisms
Highly flammable
Interferes metabolism of proteins and reproduction of cells
Long and slow process
Expensive
Aeration period required
Per acetic acid sterilisation
Contains acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide
Causes cell death
20-25 min process, heated 50-55 degrees
