Wk 5: Pain terms Flashcards
Increased sensitivity to pain
Algesia
ex: postop algesia = pt experiences pain after surgery d/t tissue trauma and inflammation
Pain producing
Algogenic
ex: surgical incision
A normally nonharmful stimulus is perceived as painful
Allodynia
ex: fibromyalgia; light touch, temp changes = pain
The absence of pain in the presence of a normally painful stimuli
Analgesia
ex: opioid analgesics relieve kidney stone pain
An unpleasant painful abnormal sensation, whether evoked or spontaneous
Dysesthesia
ex: burning sensation from diabetic neuropathy d/t nerve dysfunction
A heightened response to a normally painful stimulus
Hyperalgesia
ex: opioid induced hyperalgesia (remifentanil)
ex: sunburn = increased sensitivity
Pain in the distribution of peripheral nerves
Neuralgia
ex: herpes zoster (shingles); occurs along damaged or injured nerve
An abnormal disturbance in the function of a nerve
Neuropathy
ex: diabetic neuropathy
An abnormal sensation, whether spontaneous or evoked
Paresthesia
ex: nerve stimulation during regional anesthesia
ex: when a limb “falls asleep”
can be temporary or chronic
