wk 2 Flashcards
what are the measures of central tendency
Mean(average), weighted average, median, mode
what is mean and its symbol and what data is it used for
sum all values in the data set divided by the
number of values in the data set - “X bar”
used for interval and ratio
also known as the expected value or average
what is meduim, what data is it used for?
= the value of the observation that is in the
middle of the sequence when the observations
are written in ascending order
applicable for ordinal, interval, and ratio data
what is the value of the medium based of and whats the equation
value of the median is based on the position within the ordered observations.
n + 1 / 2
if answers even dd the two middles and divide by 2
what is mode and what is it called if there is more than one mode?
the value in the data that is observed to occur
most frequently
2 modes = bimodal, 3 modes = trimodal etc.
what is the weighted average equation and what is it used for
Xw = SUM values Wi Xi / SUM values Wi
multiply each number by its weight, then add the results. If the weights don’t add up to one, find the sum of all the variables multiplied by their weight, then divide by the sum of the weights.
Wi is a weighting score
Xi is a data value
The weights determine the relative importance of each quantity in the average.
