Wk 1 intro Flashcards
Athlete =
take the sport seriously, have a goal, engage in systematic training, be very fit
Exercise =
subset of PA that is planned, structured and repetitive and has a final/intermediate objective.
Performance related fitness components =
Agility, speed, power, reaction time, balance, coordination, kinesthetic sense.
Health related fitness components:
Cardioresp endurance, muscular endurance, strength, flexibility, body comp.
Cardiorespiratory endurance =
ability of heart, lungs and circulatory system to supply O2 and nutrients to working muscles over a long period of time. Can be assesed by VO2max. Expressing VO2max relative to body size indicates aerobic fitness.
ATP binds to _ _, _ releases from _.
ATP binds to myosin head, myosin releases from actin.
Respiratory system - characteristics
- Essential for O2 transfer to blood and eventually tissues and removal of CO2
- Minute ventilation can increase from 10-14 L/min to 100-180 L/ml
- Generally doesnt limit performance at sea level
- May limit performance at altitude or in very elite athletes
CV system - characteristics
- Delivery of O2 to tissues
CO = HRxSV - Can increase from 5 to 10/25 L/min
- Hemoglobin concentration also influences O2 carrying capacity
RER is calculated by measuring _ _ and _ _.
RER is calculated by measuring O2 consumed and CO2 produced.
Energy systems:
ATP-PCr, glycolysis, oxidative phosphorylation
EE =
O2 consumption/time x caloric equiv. of O2 x time
