Wizard of OZ Act 1 Flashcards
Welcome, most noble witch, to the country of the munchkins
Toto, stay close.
Scene 1 Lights Up
Oh, Toto, I’m so scared. What is this place? Where’s Aunt Em? That cyclone picked the house up–and put it down, but where are we?
We are grateful to you, noble witch…
I’m not a witch. My name is Dorothy. I come from Kansas.
We thank you, noble Dorothy.
I haven’t killed anyone.
Those are her feet with the sliver slippers.
Oh, dear! Oh, dear! The house must have fallen on her.
Dorothy has killed the wicked witch of the east!
I tell you I didn’t mean to hurt her.
The wicked witch held them in bondage for many years, making them slave for her day and night.
What is this place?
Munchkin country…in the magical land of oz.
Oz? Is that anywhere near Kansas City?
I’m afraid I don’t know where that is.
Who are you?
I am called Glinda the good, witch of the north.
I never heard of a good witch. I thought all witches were wicked.
Tell us, noble Dorothy, how did you come to this place?
There was a cyclone in Kansas, and before I knew what was happening, it picked up the house and carried it off into the sky. If the cyclone took us here, there must be a way to get back home.
Yes…maybe our great wizard can show you the way.
Where is the city?
It is exactly the center of things, and is ruled by Oz, the great wizard I spoke of.
How do I get there?
However, I will use all my magic arts to keep you from harm.
Won’t you go with me?
Put these on, Dorothy. And never take them off.
No, no. I’m afraid.
I’ll make you pay for what you did to the wicked witch of the east.
It was an accident.
Just you wait!
Oh, dear! Oh, dear!
Pay her no mind. Remember, follow the yellow brick road.
Goodbye…and thank you. My, they certainly are unusual shoes.
They certainly are.
Who said that?
I did.
Where are you?
Over here.
Did you speak?
Certainly. How do you do?
Pretty well, thank you. How do you do?
I’m not feeling well. My arms hurt.
Why don’t you put them down?
If you will take them away I shall be obliged.
No trouble at all. How’s that?
I feel like a new man.
I don’t believe I ever met a talking scarecrow before.
The magical land of oz is like that, I think.
You think? Don’t you know?
If I go to the Emerald City with you, do you think the great wizard would give me some brains?
I don’t know, but you may come with me, if you like.
If anyone steps on my toes or sticks a pin in me, it doesn’t matter, for I can’t feel it.
I never thought of that.
But if my head stays stuffed with straw, people will call me a fool.
I’ll ask the wizard to do all he can for you.
He doesn’t like me.
He’s just not used to you, that’s all. You mustn’t mind Toto. He never bites.
And that’s a lighted match.
Don’t run far. Now which way is the road to oz, I wonder?
Oh, I know.
Well, which way is Oz?
This way. Or, maybe this way.
Oh, dear, oh, dear. You’re not going to be much help.
I told you. I have no brains.
Toto will find the yellow brick road.
I hope that wicked witch of the west doesn’t find us first.
Come along.
Oh, oh, I feel like I’m coming apart at the seams.
It takes time to learn how to walk. You’ll get the knack of it. Take my arm. I’ll help you.
Scene 2 lights up
(from off): Not so fast, Toto. We’re having trouble keeping up.
I hope we’ll find the wizard at home.
I hope we’ll find the Emerald City first.
We shouldn’t have any trouble if we follow the yellow bricks here on the ground.
That’s good thinking.
Is it? I never know.
We ought to go and search for water.
Why?
To wash my face clean after the dust of the road. I’ll want to drink some clean water, too. Otherwise, food will stick in my throat.
You have to sleep, eat and drink and wash.
It takes a lot of work to be a human being.
(low groan): oooooooooooooo…..
What was that?
I didn’t hear anything.
I’m sure I head something.
(low): ooooooo….
There it is again. Oh, dear, oh, dear. I’ve never seen anything quite like this.
What is it?
It’s a man…and he’s all made of tin.
I’ve been groaning for more than a year, and no one has ever heard me before or come to help me.
That’s terrible. What can I do?
There’s an oil can at the foot of the tree. I’m rusted so badly that I can’t move my joints to get it.
You poor thing.
Please hurry.
It would help if you moved out where the light is better.
I can hardly move.
Scarecrow will help.
Of course, of course.
You’ll be feeling better in no time.
oooooo…..
What’s first?
Oil my neck first–then the joints in my arms–and legs–Oh, what a relief.
Try and take a few steps. Oh, that’s wonderful!
We’re on our way to the Emerald city.
To see the wizard.
Why do you want to see oz?
I want him to send me back to Kansas, and the Scarecrow wants him to put a brain in his head.
