Wired and wireless networks, protocols and layers Flashcards
1
Q
What are twisted pair cables?
A
Two insulated copper wires are twisted around each other.
2
Q
The advantages of twisted pair cables
A
- Least expensive
- If a portion of the cable is broken the rest of the network isn’t affected.
- Less vulnerable to electrical interference
3
Q
The disadvantages of twisted pair cables
A
- Poor security
- Low durability (must be maintained regularly)
4
Q
What are Coaxial cables?
A
A cable with an inner conductor surrounded by a conducting shield.
5
Q
The advantages of coaxial cables
A
- Support high bandwidth
- Easy to install
- Better resistance so are reliable and durable
- Less affected by electromagnetic interference
- Support multiple channels
6
Q
The disadvantages of coaxial cables
A
- Expensive
- Has multiple layers and so is bulky
- Effects current flow
- Not supported by fast networking standards
7
Q
What are fibre optic cables?
A
- Better bandwidth
- Faster speed
- Longer distances
- Greater flexibility
- Improved latency
-Higher security
8
Q
The disadvantages of fibre optics
A
- More expensive to produce
- Very fragile as they’re made of glass
- Installation is very expensive
