Wire-holding materials Flashcards
needed to hold the electrical conductors in place
wire-holding materials
composed of two parts: the head and the body. This is fastened to wood using screw
split knob
has only one body with a groove around its cylindrical body; the wire conductor is tied to the body by means of pieces of wire
solid knob
attached to the wood using screw; composed of two pieces - the base and the head
cleat
it is made up of two pieces of wood with two canals where two conductors are embedded
wood molding
used in the service entrance; insulator made of porcelain with a metal screw for attaching to the walls of houses
rack
u-shaped with a hard paper insulator at is base; used on low voltage circuit only
insulated staple
have different uses and therefore manufactured differently
lamb sockets
maybe opened or closed; made of porcelain and has base where the electrical attachments and a screw cover are done
ceiling/ ceiling receptacles
used in outdoor wiring; has a complete rubber body with two short lead wires protruding from the base
weatherproof socket
made of bakelite, brass or porcelain; has a switch directly connected to it and is used in table lamps
key socket
made of porcelain, brass, bakelite, and is also used in table lamps; has a pull chain switch attached to its body
pull chain socket
equipped with two push buttons located opposite each other
push-through socket
composed of two sockets joined together at an angle, with a common screw base for attachment to another receptacle
twin socket
has two built in female plugs at its side aside from the socket; plugs provide additional connection or extension
current top receptacle
has a socket for bulbs and may be controlled by a pull chain switch
fed-through socket
used in circuit which requires small bulbs and usually made of porcelain; sometime called candelabra because it looks like a candle holder
miniature socket
a substance which does not allow the passage of heat or sound
insulator
tough tubing consisting of cotton and paper strands and impregnated with black insulating substance
circular loom
wiring insulator that is made of porcelain and shape like a tube with a head at the end
porcelain tubing
available as rubber, plastic, or cloth impregnated with a sticky rubber compound
electrical tape
type of plug that is made out of rubber, plastic, or bakelite; used at the end of an appliance cord or extension cord for attachment to an electrical source
male plug
has a screw base for attachment to a lamp socket and serves as an adapter for the male plug
female plug
it is inserted in the prongs of appliance such as electrical flat irons, tape recorders, rice cookers,
appliance plug
this outlet is the source of electrical power for all household appliances
convenience outlet
safety device which protects the circuit from overloads or shorts; place in fuse cutouts or fuse holders
fuse
has a screw type base and a glass window where one can easily see whether the fuse has blown out or not
plug fuse
encased in a thick cupboard tube with copper ferrules at each other end for attachment
cartridge fuse
similar to the cartridge fuse with addition of bladelike protrusion at each end
knife blade fuse
consists of tungsten filament enclosed in a glass bulb
incandescent lamp
consists of a glass tube with argon gas and coated inside with a chemical powder called phosphor, which glows when struck by ultraviolet rays
fluorescent lamp
has in addition to its tungsten filament, two tungsten filament electrodes, and a mercury pool
mercury vapor lamp
similar to the mercury vapor lamp but it uses sodium instead of mercury
sodium vapor lamp
has no filament; contains neon gas which gives out colored light when current at high pressure strikes
neon lamp
consists of two carbon rods placed in a straight line with a small gap in between
electric arc lamp
collection of many wires
cables
