Q

2 ways the Catholic Church attempted to combat the reformation (New religious orders)

A
  1. New religious orders were established such as the barnabites or the augustinians but the most successful out of all of them were the Jesuits, members of the society of Jesus. The jesuits would go around converting Protestants into catholics and giving better religious education to priests. These new religious orders were highly successful and some are still around today

Q

2 ways the Catholic Church attempted to combat the Protestant reformation ( The inquisition)

A

The Roman inquisition’s main goal was to prevent the Protestant faith from growing. They would do this by arriving in some towns and announcing their arrival to the townsfolk. They would then tell all the Protestants to give themselves up and if they admitted to being a Protestant, the would have to fast and pray for a while but if they didn’t, and were thought to be a Protestant they may be tortured and publicly executed

Dr Ridley’s brother placed a bag of gunpowder around both of their necks. When the fire reaches Latimer he died quickly, the fire catching his bag of gunpowder. He only died once a bystander pushed some of the sticks closer to him. The dreadful sight filled almost every eye with tears
