What is Windrush Generation ?
It refers to citizens of former British colonies who arrived in UK before 1973
Why did they arrive in UK ?
As the rights of such Commonwealth citizens to live and work in Britain were substantially curtailed
Where were the people from ?
Commonwealth countries including India who arrived in Britain between 1948 and 1970
Why did the immigrants come ?
At the invitation of British Govt which was facing labour shortage due to destruction caused by W.War 2
Next what happened ?
1971 Immigration Act had guaranteed Commonwealth citizens who were already living in UK with citizenship rights even though most of them had come without any documents
Then why is the issue ?
2012 saw a change of law which asked people for proof
Now what does Windrush scheme do ?
It refers to providing citizenship rights to the people who were detained as illegal migrants
