Wind + Water Energy Sources Flashcards
1
Q
Wind Power
A
when the wind blows, it rotates a wind turbine, which can turn a generator
2
Q
Advantages of using Wind Power (3)
A
- source of renewable energy
- don’t take up much land space
- relatively low cost
3
Q
Disadvantages of using Wind Power (3)
A
- unreliable - only produces power when wind blows
- can be considered or ugly or an eyesore
- can cause noise pollution
4
Q
Water (Hydroelectric Power)
A
- water high above the ground is a store of gravitational potential energy
- hydroelectric dams trap water
- allowing it to fall rotating a turbine, which turns a generator
5
Q
Advantages of using Hydroelectric Power (3)
A
- renewable
- more reliable than wind and solar
- capable of producing lots of energy
6
Q
Disadvantages of using Hydroelectric Power (3)
A
- hydroelectric dams often change the paths of rivers
- can be affected by droughts and variation in water flow
- there are fewer suitable places to build a dam
7
Q
Tidal Energy
A
- the waves and tides in the sea are stores of kinetic energy
- tidal and wave power use this kinetic energy to rotate a turbine, which turns a generator
