Wind Patterns Flashcards
Convection currents
When warm air rises and cold air falls into place
Sea breeze
When air from the ocean comes to land
land breeze
When the air from the land blows to the sea
Coriolis effect
The rotation of the earth causes objects in the northern hemisphere to deflect to the Southern Hemisphere are deflected to the left
Jet stream
A band of fast moving wind caused by difference in temp.
About 10 km above ground
West to east in Northern Hemisphere
Trade wind
Winds that blow toward the equator bring cool air
Doldrums
A spot near the equator with very few winds
Prevailing winds
Winds that blow away from the equator bringing warm air
Prevailing westerlies
Winds that blow away from equator blows west to east found over US
Polar easterlies
Winds that blow east to west and are found in poles
Gulf Stream
An ocean current that brings warmer air to the Easter coast of the US found in Atlantic
El Niño
Band of warm ocean temps. That develop off the coast of North America (Pacific) can cause droughts warms up climate
La Niña
Band of cold ocean temp. That develop off the coast of South America can cause more precipitation cools down climate
