Wind Patterns Flashcards
Sea Breeze
A breeze blowing toward the land from the sea, especially during the day owing to the relative warmth of the land.
Land Breeze
A breeze blowing toward the sea from the land, especially at night, owing to the relative warmth of the sea.
Convection Current
A current in a fluid that results from convection.
Trade Winds
Winds that blow towards the equator, bring cooler air to the equator.
Doldrums
A spot near the equator where there are very few winds.
Jet Stream
A band of very fast moving winds caused by differences in temperature. It is about 10 km above the ground. It moves West to East in the Northern Hemisphere.
Coriolis Effect
A coriolis effect is a rotation that goes around the eastern and sethern hemisphere.
Prevailing Westerlies
The westerlies, anti-trades, or prevailing westerlies, are prevailing winds from the west toward the east in the middle latitudes between 30 and 60 degrees latitude.
Paler Easterlies
The polar easterlies are the dry, cold prevailing winds that blow from the high-pressure areas of the polar highs at the North and South Poles towards low-pressure areas within the Westerlies at high latitudes.
El Niño
Band of warm ocean temperatures that develop off the coast of South America. Warm climate causes Droughts.
La Niña
Band of cold ocean temperatures that develop off the coast of South America. It can cause more precipitation cools down climates.
The Gulf Stream
An ocean current found in the Atlantic Ocean and brings warmer temperatures to the east coast of the U.S.A.
Prevailing Winds
Winds that blow away from the equator, brings warmer air to the poles.
