Wind Energy as a Resource Flashcards
Work
the act of moving an object against some resistance to force
energy
the ability or potential ability to do work
renewable energy
an energy source that is utilized by humans that doesn’t reduce the future supply of that resource.
cyclones
a large mass of air that rotates around a strong center of low pressure
air pressure
the forces in a volume of air
kinetic
of motion or produced by motion
frame of reference
whatever we relate a motion to
joule
the unit for force
calorie
the amount of energy it takes to heat 1 gram of water by one degree C
power
the amount of work done per unit of time
watt
the amount of power required to increase/decrease the amount of energy of an object by 1 joule in 1 second.
velocity
speed and direction of motion
rotor
the rotating part of a machine
vane
a rudder that makes a propeller windmill point to the wind
turntable.
a circular disc on top of the windmill that makes it rotate
governor
a part of a windmill that stops it from going to fast
dead zone
a 25 degree zone in which wind doesn’t catch either blade
anemometer
an instrument that measures wind speed
beaufort scale
a descriptive scale that scribes wind speed
Coriolis effect
Because the Earth rotates on its axis, circulating air is deflected toward the right in the Northern Hemisphere and toward the left in the Southern Hemisphere. This deflection is called the Coriolis effect.
