Who was William Wallace?

A

In 1296 John Balliol surrendered to Edward I of England and was removed as King of Scots. Edward took control of Scotland, He forced 2, 000 Scottish nobles to swear they would be loyal to him. Some Scots refused to see Edward as their king and fought back.

One of those people was a man called William Wallace.

• Why was 1297 a significant year in Wallace’s life?

A

According to Blind Harry, Wallace’s rebellion in. The South of Scotland began in 1297 with the murder of Sir William Heselrig, the Sheriff of Lanark.

This was believed to be an act of revenge for the death of Wallace’s wife who had been put to death for helping him escape capture.

1297 was also the year that Wallace and his co-commander, Andrew Murray, defeated a large English army at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297. This was Wallace’s most significant victory.

A

William Wallace became famous throughout Scotland for his attacks on the English and lots of people joined his ‘common army’. Wallace found great support in another rebel in the North of Scotland. He was a young nobleman called Andrew Murray, the son of Andrew Murray of Petty, the Justiciar of Moray
