Wildlife Biology Flashcards
Tropical Rainforest
A tropical rainforest is a hot, moist biome found near Earth’s equator.
Temperate Rainforest
are coniferous or broadleaf forests that occur in the temperate zone and receive heavy rainfall.
Temperate Deciduous Forest
are dominated by trees that lose their leaves each year. They are found in areas with warm, moist summers and mild winters
Taiga
the sometimes swampy coniferous forest of high northern latitudes, especially that between a tropical rainforest and desert biome.
Savanna
a grassy plain in tropical and subtropical regions, with few trees.
Temperate Grasslands
are a division of a larger biome grouping of grasslands that includes tropical savannas.
Chaparral
vegetation consisting chiefly of tangled shrubs and thorny bushes.
Desert
is a barren area of land where little precipitation occurs and consequently living conditions are hostile for plant and animal life.
Tundra
a type of biome where the tree growth is hindered by low temperatures and short growing seasons
Lakes and Ponds
a body of water shallow enough to support rooted plants.
Marsh and Swamps
A swamp is a place where the plants that make up the area covered in water are primarily woody plants or trees. Woody plants would be mangroves or cypress trees. A marsh, on the other hand, is defined as having no woody plants. The non-woody plants would be saltmarsh grasses, reeds, or sedges.
Rivers
a large natural stream of water flowing in a channel to the sea, a lake, or another such stream
Estuaries
the tidal mouth of a large river, where the tide meets the stream
Coral Reefs
a ridge of rock in the sea formed by the growth and deposit of coral.
Open Ocean
Any water in a sea or lake that is neither close to the bottom nor near the shore can be said to be in the pelagic zone.
