Q

How are amphibians defined?

A

Ectothermy = do not maintain their body temperature with their metabolism, they do it environmentally/behaviorally. Seeks sources of sun or shade depending on their needs
Much lower food needs.
Some conditions are too extreme for ectothermy to work. In certain regions they go into stasis (hibernation/estivation) when conditions are too extreme.

Skin = Thin and extremely permeable. Only have rudimentary lungs and performs gas exchange through skin. Inefficient circulation and respiration. Highly susceptible to environmental pathogens and toxins, skin often secrets chemicals.

Reproduces without an amnion. Their eggs are no waterproof. Cannot lay eggs in a non aquatic environment.

Juvenile metamorphosis: juveniles hatch in aquatic environment, look radically different than adults.
