finger
when there is a mixture of heavy and light fuels, the light fuels burn faster causing the finger affect. When not conntroled can form new a new head.
Head
The Head is the part of a wildland fire that spreads most rapidly. Normaly found on the side of the fire opposite from the direction from which the wind is blowing.
origin
the area where the fire started and the point from which it spreads.
aspect
the compass direction a slope faces
Perimeter
the perimeter is the outer boundery or distance around burning or burned area.
Heel
Side opposite the head. burns slower, typically down hill or against the wind.
Flank
sides of a wildland fire
Island
Unburned fuels in the black
spot fire
Caused by flying sparks and embers falling outside the involved area
Green
Area of unburned fuel next to wildland fire
fuel size
small light fuels burn faster
compactness
tightly packed surface and subsurface fuels burn slower, unlike aerial fuels which burn faster.
Continuity
Fuel in contact with other fuels propigating fire spread.
Volume
amount of fuel present.
Wind
Fans the flames
