Data from neighbourhood obtained from 1991 cencus (crimes, violence, vandalism, shop lifting, burglary, theft)
Aim
To study range of factors and to identify which are most significant in predicting future criminality of individuals
Participants
1957 students from 13 state schools in Peterborough
Results
People who commit crimes commit wide range of crimes
45% males committed at least one of studied crimes
31% females at least one of studied crimes
Offenders more likely to be involved with in alcohol and drug abuse
9.8% males 3.8% females committed serious crime of studied crime
Conclusions
High protective factors less likely to offend than those with low protective factors
Those with high risk factors more likely to commit crime
Personality factors: poor self control, low shame, antisocial values
Life style risks: time with peers in public setting , drink + drugs, truanting from school
Protective factors: strong family bonds
