Wider Design Issues Flashcards
How is deforestation an issue
Loss of trees for agriculture, contributes to greenhouse effect & cause flooding/soil erosion. Loss of wild habitats
How is mining an issue
Extracting minerals, metals & coal from Earth. Soil erosion, air/water pollution. Creates open pits in landscapes, piles of waste & risk of sinkholes
What are the responsibility of designers
Social responsibilities to consider what impacts their products may have on env:
- using mats from sustainable sources
- sourcing mats that have positive impact on farmers/workers
What are the 6R’s
RETHINK: reconsider design & impact
REFUSE: avoid buying/using mats that are env/soc unacceptable
REDUCE: minimise consumption/waste
REUSE: use products again for another purpose rather than throwing out
REPAIR: fix damaged products where possible rather than replace
RECYCLE: take products apart & covert parts into usable mats once again
How can we reduce atmospheric pollution
- switching from diesel & petrol to electric vehicles
- reducing no. of journeys made
- increasing use of renewable energy
How can we reduce oceanic pollution
- using plastic free alternatives (refusing plastic straws, cups, bags)
- increase recycling to reduce waste dumped in ocean

What does FSC do
Promote responsible, env friendly management of world’s forests
