WHY WE NEED CLASSIFICATION Flashcards
1
Q
why we need classification (4)
A
- phylogenetic classification allows us to infer close relationships, i.e same taxon means likely closely related
- if a new animal is discovered we can predict characteristics
- quicker to communicate with a common phrase
- when looking at the health of an area, counting families is more useful than individual species
2
Q
classification is tenative
A
- depends on current knowledge, could change with new advancements
3
Q
3 domains (3)
A
- eubacteria - familiar bacteria, prokaryotes
- archaea - bacteria (often) with odd metabolisms
- eukaryota - plantae, animalia, fungi, protoctista
4
Q
five kingdoms by domain (2)
A
- eubacteria & archaea = prokaryotes
- eukaryota - plantae, animalia, fungi, protoctista
5
Q
characteristics of kingdoms (5)
A
- prokaryotes = cells lack a nuclear envelope & membrane-bound organelles
- plantae = multicellular eukaryotes, photosynthesise, cellulose
- animalia = multicellular eukaryotes, no cell wall, nervous co-ordination, heterotrophic
- fungi = heterotrophic eukaryotes, chitin cell walls (w/ hyphae filaments), reproduce by spores
- protoctista = mainly single cell eukaryotes, no tissue differentiation
