Why was early opposition to apartheid unsuccessful? Flashcards
What was the 1951 separate voters act?
how was it received? what did the NP do in response to this?
Withdrew voting rights from non-white south africans
initially opposed in courts, so the NP recruited Afrikaner judges
What was the 1950 group areas act?
it allowed for the forced removal of ethnic groups from specific areas, forcing them to move to townships or Bantustans. These areas were turned into white districts
give three examples of areas impacted by the group areas act
How were they impacted?
District Six - from 1966 60,000 people were forcibly removed, with buildings in the district getting destroyed
Durban - Indian residents owned a substantial amounts of private property in the city’s centre, 41, 000 Indians removed and tens of thousands of Africans sent to townships
Sophiatown - diverse residents, racially mixed, removal began in 1950 and by 1956 very little of the previous culture remained. Renamed Triumph
Overall, these areas lost a lot of their previous cultures, and many people were displaced to make way for white south Africans to move in
How did the NP separate races without causing economic collapse?
They created a hierarchy of power, offering urban rights to a minority of Black SA’s depending on varying requirements (being born in a town, working in a town for 10 yrs, or having lived in a town for 15 yrs)
What were the pass laws?
How were the pass laws received?
They were extremely unpopular, with the aggressive behaviour from police when checking passes only led to greater resentment
