Why do you think people go see theater?
For its:
- immediacy, relevance, and engagement
- social aspect
- visual spectacle
- sensation of sound
- experiences we don’t often have
- engagement with the audience about relevant audience

Doesn’t really matter because they’re interchangeable
What is the bare minimum that you need to create theater?
Actor(s) + Audience+ Space = Theater
What would happen if there were no actors in theater?
A group of people in a place, wondering why they are there
What would happen if there was no audience in theater?
You would have no one to perform for
What would happen if you didn’t have a space available to preform?
You wouldn’t have a place for an audience to see your performance
What is a performance?
An activity where some people do something while other people watch
What are some example of performances in real life?
Job interview, student and teachers, religion, sports, and politics.
What are some shared traits of performances?
- There’s always people that do something (performers, actors)
- something is always done (speech, ritual, or play)
- watchers (spectators, audiences)
- Performance space ( stadium, church, theater)
- Time (beginning and ending)
What are some differences among performances?
- purpose
- relationship between audience and performers
What are some of the shared traits of arts?
- art is artificial
- art stands alone
- art is self-aware
- art produces a kind of response
What are some differences between the arts?
- relationships with time and space
- audience size
