Why partial dentures? Flashcards
Why do we need partial dentures ?
- Appearance
- Speech
- Mastication
- Prevention of attrition
- Prevention of unwanted tooth movement
- Prevention of tongue spread
- Maxillofacial defects
3 Examples of unwanted tooth movements
Drifting , tilting , overeruption
What health benefits do we get from partial dentures?
Appearance
Masticatory function
Speech
Craniofacial function
What structures can be compromised ?
Teeth
Periodontium
Oral Mucosa
Craniofacial structures
Downsides of partial dentures
Caries
Tissue damage
Periodontal disease
Increased plaque levels
How can we minimise damage from dentures
- Ensure that we have a good it of the prothesis
- Avoid tissue coverage when it is possible
- Good oral hygiene is critical
Kennedy Class 1
Bilateral free end saddle
Kennedy Class 2
Unilateral free end saddle
Kennedy Class 3
A single bounded saddle not crossing the midline
Kennedy Class 4
A single bounded saddle which crosses the midline
How can you distinguish between a KC 3 and 4 ?
A KC 3 will be a single bounded saddle which will NOT cross the midline but a KC 4 is a single bounded saddle which will cross the midline
In the case that here is more than one saddle, how do we classify ?
the most posterior saddle becomes the main kennedy classification but the second saddle becomes the modification
Which type of kennedy classification has no modifications ?
Kennedy Class 4
