why do we use the etiology of mental illness?
A
its more mental than a mental disorder but less physical than a physical disorder

what is the DSM definition of mental illness?
A
- a clinically significant disturbance in an individual’s thought, mood, and behaviour
- it reflects a dysfunction in various processes
- its associated with significant stress/disability in different types of activities

what are some DSM critisims
A
- no hard science
- no context of a person being diagnosed
- more symptom/ experience focused
- doesn’t address treatment/therapy
- DSM is constantly changing

why can diagnoses be difficult
A
- they’re essentially decided by a group of people
- there’s a lot of bias
- context is super important
- it’s very subjective

why have mental disorders become more common?
A
- possibly more awareness
- could be more willing to look at human behaviour define it as mental illness
