Why Leeds University? Flashcards
3 MAIN REASONS
1) University course structure
2) the support system offered by the university
3) The actual city itself
Course structure
Integrated course structure
- lectures for the bulk of the scientific theory
- problem based learning
- emphasis on group work - like minded individuals elevate one another
- clinical exposure - gradually more throughout the first year
Why I like group work and Problem based learning structure?
- attaches a case study to what we are learning that week, apply newfound knowledge almost immediately => will stand out in my mind
- working in a group of like-minded medics will be able to elevate each others understanding and help each other with so called “problems”
Anatomy
Used to do full-body cadaver dissection, now do prosections
- useful for anatomy
- student blogs or videos from Leeds website have said anatomy is taught very well at leeds
2) SUPPORT SYSTEM offered by Leeds
Medicine is a hugely academically rigorous course which is mentally taxing and physically taxing so a good student support system was something i was drawn to when looking at universities.
- firstly each student is given a personal tutor - at college they’ve been hugely helpful, and oftentimes they are doctors so know first hand what students could be struggling with and are experiencing - chemistry tutor hugely beneficial turn to them with any difficult problem
- family system where students from first year are paired up then paired with students from higher years
- mentors for different specialities (videos)
- med scociety and the many other related societies
3) the city itself
1) much larger city than I’m used to
2)the actual location of the university in the city
Leeds city itself
Much larger than i am used to
- exmouth is a small town in Devon
- Whereas Leeds is much larger city =>
- Hospitals will be busier and the cases i will be learning from will be much more diverse due to the wider demographic of people in Leeds
- So a city with a a bigger, more diverse population really appealed to me as it will allow for a wider variety of learning experiences and could arguably contribute to me becoming a better doctor.
Lastly Leeds university and its location itself
- really like that its a campus university but that it doesn’t feel isolated
- only a 15 minute walk to the city centre from campus and a short walk to the surrounding accommodations
- from commuting to college I’ve learnt that i lose so much time in the mornings/evenings because of waiting from trains etc.. so being able to walk or cycle would be amazing
