Why Hitler Came To Power Flashcards
What factors contributed to hitlers rise
- the weakness of the Weimar Government
- the treaty of Versailles
- the economic crisis
- lack of opposition
- the party’s propaganda
Give 2 background points for into of my Hitler came to power
- on January the 30th the president invited Hitler to be chancellor by using his emergency power
- by 1933 The natzi party was the biggest party in the Reichstag however did not have over 50% of the votes through proportional representation
Describe the economic crisis
Ku
- in 1929 the world suffers the Great Depression after the Breakdown of wall street in America.
- this pushed Germany into an economic crisis as they were forced to repay all the lines from America which were keeping them afloat. Causing banks to shut in Germany and unemployment to reach 6 million
Why may hitlers rise to power be due to the economic crisis
- because this was now the 2nd time fhe New Democratic Party had lead to economic ruin in 10 years
- this lead to people looking to the Natzi party and their strong fascist promises
- support grew during the year of the depression from 12 seats to 230
- indicating a clear link between poor economy and rising support for the natzi party
However what suggest that the economic crisis lead to the rise of Hitler
Because during the depression support for the communist party also grew greatly and people thought a communist revolution might take place it was so popular
So, whilst the economic crisis may have provided the Nazis with ideal circumstances to exploit. It was not enevatable that they rather than the communist party would come to power
Explain the weakness of the Weimar govt
The voting system used was PR
- this was ineffective as you needed 60, 000 votes to be the leading party which none of the 28 party’s ever got.
- meaning there was never a sting and stable government able to pull Germany from its struggles
Why may hitlers rise to power be due to the weak govt
- did not give Germany a good experience of democracy
- 21 govts between 3 years
- HITLER promised to get ride of PR and democracy and return to a sting and stable decoratorship which Germany did very well under. This won him support as they wanted change
However what disproves that the weakness of the govt was what pushed Hitler to power. What was more important
- the govt did reduce support and success during 1924-1929 known as the golden years. When Germany had loans keeping it well from America.
- during this stage the nazis were only on the fringe with 12 seats but when the depression hit they grew support
Showing that they did have support for a small time and that if it were not for the Wall Street crash then it would have continued to grow in prosperity. So infact enonimic crisis lead to his rise
Explain the TofV
-at the end of ww1 Germany were Forced to sing the treaty of Versailles in 1919 admitting to war guilt and to pay back with finances and land whilst also keeping defences low.
Why may hitlers rise to power be due to TofV
- Germany lost £6,600 million forcing it into poverty for years to come with no hope
- the People were angry about this and bLmes the govt for stabbing them in the back
- Hitler however promised to end this and rip up the agreement so people voted for him as they knew the TofV would destroy them and their children’s children
However, what why can it be argued that it wasn’t the treaty of V that lead to Hitler coming to power. What was more important
- Germany found a way to survive the treaty by taking loans from America.
- but then the lines come to and end so did any change of survival for Germany
- so infact the depression of 1929 gave the nazis party the wind in their sails not the treaty as they would have been able to cope had the lones not been called back
Describe why the Natzi party had little opposition
Because the socialist and communist despite having overlapping views couldn’t unite against the Natzi party
- this was because the communists couldn’t trust the socialists after the sparticists uprising when the socialist party crushed them.
Why may hitlers rise to power be due to the lack of opposition
- if the two groups had been willing to work together then they could have produced a coalition govt and blacked Hitler
- only option
