Zola’s 5 social triggers which encompass the way in which symptoms become to be seen as abnormal
1) The symptoms interfere with social relationships
2) They interfere with everyday activities like work, school, hobbies
3) Interpersonal crisis - e.g a breakup causes someone to focus more on their symptoms
4) Temporalising symptoms - e.g if I still have symptoms in a week I’ll get them checked
5) Sanctioning - e.g my wife told me I had to come, social campaigns from celebrities
Boyd’s definitions of:
- Disease
- Illness
- Sickness
- Healing and wholeness
- Disease - pathological process and deviation from a social norm
- Illness - patient’s experience of ill health even if a pathology or disease cannot be found
- Sickness - the role negotiated within society
- Healing and wholeness - whatever process results in the experience of wholeness and greater spirit of the body
People make their decision of approaching the healthcare system based on signs and symptoms, give the definitions of signs and symptoms
Symptoms - The feelings or experiences that alert a patient that all is not well
Signs - The pointers that are identified by the doctor that suggests that there is a pathology or lesion
