What was the verdict in the Bown vs. Topeka case?
The state court told Brown that schools could not be integrated because Plessey vs. Ferguson said that black peple could be treated separate but equal.
What happened during Brown vs. The Board of Education?
The NAACP urged Brown to take his case to the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court claimed that all school segregation was unconstitutional.
What was the problem with Brown vs. The Board of Education?
The government did not give a deadline for integration so man schools, particuarly in teh South, did not integrate.
Describe the events in Little Rock Nine.
Nine black students were chosen to integrate an all-white high school in Arkansas.
Mobs arrived to shout abuse at the students and the National Guard was called in to stop the students getting into the school.
President Eisenhower was forced to send in federal troops to escort the students into school.
What effect did Little Rock Nine have on the USA?
It gave the USA a bad reputation as pictures of the abuse were published worldwide.
This forced the government to act.
What did Rosa Parks do?
She refused to give up her seat on a bus for a white person.
She was arrested and fined.
What was the effect of Rosa Park’s arrest?
The MIA (Montgomery Improvement Association) set up a boycott of all buses in Montgomery.
They organised lift shares and black taxi firms to give cheaps for black people.
The boycott lasted for 381 days.
What was the effect of the Montgomery Bus Boycott?
The Supreme Court declared that all bus segrgation was unconstitutional so the black people rode the buses again.
Showed that the government were willing to act when they had to however it did not mean everyone followed the law.
What methods of protest did Martin Luther King use?
Non-violent direct action
What was the effect of non-violent protest?
Black people would be seen by the world as innocent victims and the people of the USA would be seen as the villains. This would make the USA feel ashamed and force them to make changes.
