Why Believe In God? Flashcards
St Anselm of Canterbury
Created the Ontological Argument
Cosmological argument
Something cannot come from nothing - the First Cause which caused the universe to come into existence must be God
St Thomas Aquinas
Created the cosmological argument
Big Bang theory
The theory states that around 14 billion years ago all the matter in the universe was concentrated into a single tiny point which began to enlarge rapidly in a hot explosion, and is still expanding today
Teleological argument
The world shows that it has been designed and so it must have been created/designed by someone: it could not have come about by chance.
William Paley
Created the teleological argument
Ontological argument
God is the most perfect being imagineable, and he must exist otherwise we could not produce this description.
Argument from experience
Miracles, answered prayers, meditation, prayer, powerful event
Moral argument
People have a basic understanding of “good” and “bad”, “right” and “wrong” and this knowledge must have come from God.
Reasons people might not believe in God
Everything in the universe can be explained in a satisfactory way without using God
The world cannot have been designed by a perfect God as it is full of design flaws
God cannot be all-good and all-powerful because evil exists and he does nothing about it
There is no need of God for people to be moral and make good decisions
