WHO Priority Pathogens Lists Flashcards
In 2017 the World Health Organization published a “Priority Pathogens List for R&D of new Antibiotics.”
They created 3 priority levels:
- CRITICAL
- HIGH
- MEDIUM
The highest priority group is CRITICAL.
On the Priority Pathogens list the bacteria is identified in two different ways:
● Their taxonomic Family name or Genus/species
● plus which antibiotic they resist.
They urgently recommended increased research to identify new classes of antibiotics that could treat those illnesses listed in the _______ group.
Critical
The 3 medications that the organisms on the list are resistant to:
> Ampicillin and/or penicillin,
> fluoroquinolone,
> vancomycin
The third pathogen in the critical section of the list is: Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE).
As far back as 2013 high rates of this infection were being observed in:
● Greece
● The Indian Sub-Continent
● USA
● Israel
Meaning of ESBL
Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamases
Meaning of MDR
Multi-drug resistant
Some drug resistant organisms, classified as ____, are evading a number of (related) antibiotic drugs because these bacteria can, and do, produce a certain enzyme which disrupts or destroys the antibiotic molecules.
ESBL
A way that bacteria may “exchange segments of DNA”
passing on useful mutations that increase resistance to antibiotic drugs.
This is a condition when a patient has a bacterial infection that proves to be resistant to a multitude of antibiotics.
Enterococci
The preferred drug to treat “Enterococci”
Vancomycin
Priority 1: CRITICAL diseases
● Acinetobacter baumannii
● Pseudomonas aeruginosa
● Enterobacteriaceae
Priority 2: HIGH diseases
● Enterococcus faecium, ● Staphylococcus aureus, ● Helicobacter pylori, ● Campylobacter spp., ● Salmonellae, ● Neisseria gonorrhoeae,
Priority 3: MEDIUM
● Streptococcus pneumoniae,
● Haemophilus influenzae,
● Shigella spp.,
