Housing
Houses were divided into apartments to fit more people. Poor sanitation. Poor poeple lived in doss houses for a night or two.
Work and workhouses
Many residents worked in small, dark, overcrowded shops in trades sich as shoemaking, tailoring and making matches. Hours were long and wages were low. The Whitechapel workhouse wa the last resource for sleeping. Rules were strict as everyone was seperate such as children and mothers.
Immigration
Irish men came to England to make a living. Large numbers settled in Whitechapel. Eastern Europe Jewish immigration. Jews came from russia after the assassination of Tsar Alexander II. Jews were seperated mostly because they only spoke Yiddish There were fears that immigrants were bringing dangerous political views. There had been several assassinations and bombings across europe carried out by anrachists.
Why was policing in whitechapel difficult
Narrow streets made it easy for criminals to hide. Alcohol caused a lot of problems, there were problems with sex work such as prostitution and brothels, gangs of all ages. Officers went on the beat, criminals could memorise this and could work around it.
