White Blood Cells Flashcards
State types of white cells
.Neutrophils
.Lymphocytes
.T-Cells
.B-Cells
What are the function of neutrophils?
Their role is to engulf and destroy pathogens in the process of phagocytosis.
Where are neutrophils found?
In the blood stream
How is phagocytosis carried out?
1) Phagocyte detects foreign antigens on the surface of a pathogen
2) Phagocyte engulfs the pathogen to form a vacuole
3) Lysosomes empty their contents into the vacuole
4) Lysosomes release lysozymes that hydrolyse protein + lipids to digest and destroy the pathogen
How are neutrophils adapted to migrate from the bloodstream into tissues in response to infection?
- Have multi-lobed nucleus which enables them to squeeze through small gaps in dilated blood vessels by extravasation.
- Cell membrane is also flexible
How are neutrophils adapted to respond to chemicals secreted by immune system and pathogens?
.They have special cell surface receptors which allows the neutrophil to respond to infections and migrate towards pathogens.
