Q

How is phagocytosis carried out?

A

1) Phagocyte detects foreign antigens on the surface of a pathogen
2) Phagocyte engulfs the pathogen to form a vacuole
3) Lysosomes empty their contents into the vacuole
4) Lysosomes release lysozymes that hydrolyse protein + lipids to digest and destroy the pathogen

Q

How are neutrophils adapted to migrate from the bloodstream into tissues in response to infection?

A
  • Have multi-lobed nucleus which enables them to squeeze through small gaps in dilated blood vessels by extravasation.
  • Cell membrane is also flexible
