White Blood Cell Diseases Flashcards
What is a smudge cell?
Broken and spilling out lymphocyte
How can CLL be indicated on a blood film?
Smudge cells
How can ALL be indicated on blood film? (2)
- Lymphoblasts
- Pancytopenia (erythropenia + leukopenia + thrombocytopenia)
Where do lymphadenopathies present in ALL? (3)
- Neck/cervical
- Axillae (armpits)
- Groin
What does ALL cause the swelling of? (4)
- Lymph nodes
- Liver —> hepatomegaly
- Spleen —> splenomegaly
- Testicles
How can the bone marrow be tested for leukaemia?
Aspirate —> bone marrow test
How can leukaemia be identified by a bone marrow aspirate?
Normal bone marrow cells replaced by lymphoblasts
Which 2 types of genetic tests are done when a patient has ALL and why?
- Cytogenic
- Molecular
What indicates good ALL prognosis on a cytogenic/molecular genetic analysis?
Hyperploidy
What indicates poor ALL prognosis on a cytogenic/molecular genetic analysis?
Translocation - t(4;11)
How can ALL be treated? (4)
- Blood transfusion (erythrocytes and platelets)
- Antibiotics
- Systemic chemotherapy
- Intrathecal chemotherapy (around spinal cord)
Which gene mutation causes CML and why?
BCR-ABL1
- BCR on chromosome 22 (Philadelphia) fuses with ABL1 on chromosome 9
- encodes protein with uncontrolled tyrosine kinase activity —> leukaemic clone
How is CML treated?
Tyrosine kinase inhibitors
How can CML be indicated on a blood film?
Left shift (myelocytes present)
How can AML be indicated on a blood film? (3)
- Myeloblasts
- Pancytopenia (erythropenia + leukopenia + thrombocytopenia)
- Nucleated erythrocytes
