Malting of Barley

- Placed in warm, damp room
- Germination & Enzymes
- After a few days the growth is stopped and the product is malted barley.
- The Malted Barley is then crushed and mixed with warm water, starched is converted to sugar resulting in a sweet liquid called wort.

Single Malt Scotch Whisky
A
Can only be made using malted barley and must be distilled using a pot still.
Must be matured for a minimum of three years in oak barrels.
Must be the product of just one distillery.

Blended Scotch Whisky
A
A blend of malt whisky and grain whisky from different distilleries.

Majority are blends of pot and column still spirits. Commonly use unmalted barley.
