Whether understanding about how they synoptic gospels came into being, assits understanding of the synoptic gospels themselves Flashcards
It is necessary to understand how they came into being:
Oral tradition - reliability.
Necessary to understand how they came into being to understand the meaning as the purpose & reliability is better understood if we know where they came from. Through understanding that they were written via process of oral tradition, and that people of the time were good at ‘rote memorisation’ as many of them were illiterate, gives Christian’s more understanding of the time it came form, and emphasises its reliability.
It is necessary to understand how they came into being:
Scholars - layers & different levels of meaning
By understanding the history transmission that occurred when the gospels came into being, it helps us to see layers and different levels of meaning ?
- Could also argue that we need scholars to reveal these layers and interpret the different Sitz Im Leben to understand the meaning and context. e.g. Knowing that agriculture was a lifestyle when Jesus was alive, helps us to understand the meaning of the Parable of the Sower.
Not necessary to understand how they came into being:
Theological message more important than context
Need to focus on what evangelists are trying o convey in his message rather than where it came form. Although concept is revenant, it is secondary to the theological message. E.g.??
Not necessary to understand how they came into being:
God speaks through Gospel for today, so the transmission of history is irrelevant. People will be able to listen and interpret Word of God in their own way, and this is what God would have wanted.
Not necessary to understand how they came into being:
Argue that knowing the Sit I’m Leben doesn’t necessarily aid understanding today, as the context is understandable in its own right. Don’t need scholars…
The scholars could be wrong and misleading about the transmission history and therefore could show biased.
