How can you handle having a career when you have kids?
They talked about how they were in a no-win situation
feel like they are judged at being moms, and also judged as not a good worker
They end up – if they were in a career they are on the career track at the beginning, but once they have kids they fall off the career tracks onto the mommy track

Hypotheses
H1: working moms viewed as warmer and less competent than working non-moms
H2: working moms will be more disadvantaged (more discriminated against) than working non-moms
H3: Working moms will be viewed as less competent and be more disadvantaged (discriminated against) than working dads
Data and Methods
Sample: 72 women and 50 undergraduates at Princeton
Assess each applicant on a scale from 1 (not at all) to 7 (extremely likely) as:
capable, efficient, organized, skillful (perceived competence)
good-natured, sincere, warm, trustworthy (perceived warmth)
plus fillers
As a client, how likely would you be to:
- request Kate (Dan) as one of your consultants?” (hire),
- recommend Kate (Dan) for a promotion?” (promote),
- invest in continuing training and education for Kate (Dan)?” (train).
Data Collection
Participated rated 2 fictitious applicants from vignettes
one applicant was the experimental condition that varied by sex and parental status (had a baby or not)
out of the 3 - everyone will get 2 that are the same
one out of the 3 is manipulated by sex and parental status

dads had no difference when it came to competent
moms - lowest
Participants ranked them similarly in terms of
their perception and warmth
Working moms
appear to have consequences for scoring low on competence and high on warmth
but for dads, they don’t have the same consequence
Results H1:
Working moms viewed as warmer and less competent than working non-moms.

Working moms will be more disadvantaged (more discriminated against) than working non-moms.
