wheels Flashcards
what do the wheels and tyres support
support on ground
mobility for taxiing, take off, landing
Tyers’ purpose is?
absorb/ cushion aircraft from the shok of irregular surface and landing techniques
Nose wheel houses what?
brake unit
to provide means of deaccleration when landing
Aircraft wheels facilitate…
tyre replacement
Types of wheels
Loose & Detachable wheels
Divided wheels
Loose & detachable wheels
made with
1) one flange that is integral with the wheel body
2) one loose flange that is fitted over the rim
difference between loose and detachabel flange wheels
is how they are secured
Loose flange = retained by locking device on the rim
detacheable = secured by nuts & bolts
*detacheable flange might be one piece or multiple pieces
Divided wheel
two half wheels connect by nuts/washers, bolts, and/or tapped,
also a seal is incorporate to avoid abrassion between two half and provide airtight joint
Used with ‘Tubeless typre”
how to prevent creep
When typres rotate and ‘slippage’ around the wheels occurs
Excess creep tears out the inflation valve and tyre will burst
to avoid:
1. ensure air pressure in tyre is correctly maintained
2. Incorporate good wheel design
how to conteract/monitor creep
Knurled Flange
The inner side of the flange is milled, so that the side pressure of typre locks the beads to the flange
Tapered Bead Seat
The wheel is tapered so that the flange area is is of greater diameter than the centre of the rim.
When tyre is inflated, the side pressure forces beads outwards to grip the rim
Creap Marks
painted white lines can be spoted when misaligned
wheel material
alumium alloy
magnesium alloy - electrom
after initial machining, what treatments are applied to the wheels
anti-corrosive treatments:
1) alumiumum alloy == anodizing
2) magnesium == chromate
3) final finish iwth cellulose or epoxy resin applied to the wheels
wheels for tubeless tyres
similar construction to non-tubeless tyres
are i**mpregnated with Bakelite to seal **the material
uses O ring seals to prevent leakage
Valve is built into the wheel itself - not effected by creep (but creep can affect typres still)
Fusible plugs
hard braking can cause exceel heat and tyre blow out…
to prevent it, fusible plugs are fitted in ‘Tubeless tyres’ to allow controlled deflation
3 Temperatures coded for identification:
Red: 155C
Green 177C
Amber: 199 C
Creep is normal on new typres
yes..
