Wheelchairs Flashcards
Rental vs Purchase
Rental: short term use; terminal or will recover
Purchase: slowly progressing; long term use (MD, Park, Chronic cond.)
Downside to a high back chair?
deceases ability/motion; are hard to turn and heavy
When is a rigid frame a good choice?
for someone who is more active like in sports (efficient)
better for a full time or more advanced user
What are the pros/cons of a folding frame?
easier to put in a car, but the cross frames decrease efficiency during propulsion
What is camber?
tilting of the wheels; commonly used for sport; increase turning and stability)
What would be a good population for a recliner wheelchair?
the more disabled (post surgery, need trunk/neck support)
What are casters?
wheels…(8” is most common); smaller the caster the easier to maneuver
What is the preferred material type for casters?
rubber
What population are projections good for?
those with a lack of grip (finger flexors C8)
What are the pros/cons of a sling seat?
standard, inexpensive, stretches out causing decreased posture that may lead to pressure sores via IR of hip
What are the pros/cons of a solid seat?
we should use this whenever possible; can put a cushion on it; increase postural support and balance and function
What are the various types of tires?
Solid: most common; decreased traction; rough ride
Pneumatic: air filled; flat tires; some have foam in; treads
Spoke: absorb shock; require maint.; less durable; fingers protectors likely needed
Mag: plastic; heavier; more durable
Quick Release: need more hand control to take off, but do come off
What population would elevating leg rests be good for?
post surgery like hip with ROM restrictions and PAD (blood flow issued)
What does axle placement contribute to?
tire placement; DUMP (wheelies, COG over BOS)
What population would a lap board be good for?
hemiplegia, chronic pain and hand edema
