Wheelchair Flashcards
Types of frames
Folding and rigid
What is the Pros/Cons to folding frame?
Pro: -easy transfer -smoother ride -shock absorption Con: -Heavier -More maintenance
What is pro/con of rigid frame?
Pro: -lighter weight -stronger -easier to propel -less maintenance Con: -difficult to transfer -less shock absorption -uncomfortable
Seatback: difference between high back and low back
High back: High back=low mobility (trade off) Additional support throughout the spine Low back: Low back=active individuals UE clearance to access wheels
What is the standard seat back support ?
Very thin
What are the 4 types of armrests
- non-removable
- wrap around armrests
- height-adjustable arm rests
- full-length arm rests
What can you do with non-removable armrest?
Mainly STS. Hard to do any pivot transfers
What is good/bad about wrap around armrest?
Good: reduce width of chair
Bad: restricts transferring
What is good about full length armrests
Larger surface for pushups and transfers
Prevents getting closer to surface
What is good about height adjustable armrests?
- good for children bc they’re growing
- useful for people who need more or less support throughout the day
If the axle is posterior…
Moves COM forward which is bad for mobility
But it decreases tipping risk
If the axle is anterior…
Moves COM backward which is good because it decreases stress on joints and muscles and is easier to turn and propel. But there’s increased tipping risk.
One patient that would benefit from having axle placed farther back
Amputees so they don’t tip. Their center of mass is altered because they don’t have those body parts (legs)
What does the handrims needed depend on?
Strength of user
Amount of finger function
Grip strength
User’s preference
What are the two types of wheels and what is the difference?
Spoke and Mag
Spoke is more shock absorbing, lighter, but increased maintenance.
Mag is less shock absorbing, heavier, but no maintenance is needed.
