Anti-tipping devices
small extensions, with or without wheels, attached to the lower horizontal support bar to prevent accidental backward tipping of a wheelchair
Armrests:
arm supports on a wheelchair
Caster wheels:
the small front wheels of a wheelchair
Drive wheels:
the large rear wheels of a wheelchair used for propulsion
Fixed frame:
the wheelchair frame is solid and cannot be folded
Folding-frame wheelchair:
can be folded or collapsed for storage or transport by raising footplates and pulling up on the handles located on either side of the seat
Footrest:
front rigging with only a footplate
Front rigging:
consists of a footplate attached to either a foot-rest or an elevating leg rest on a wheelchair; the purpose is to provide support for the lower extremities
Heel loops:
constructed of cloth strapping or webbing; attach to footplates and prevent the feet from sliding off the foot-plates and under the wheelchair
Leg rest:
wheelchair front rigging with a footplate and calf pad support
One-arm drive:
has two hand rims on one drive wheel with a linking mechanism between the drive wheels, providing control for both drive wheels using one upper extremity
Pelvic positioners:
devices that stabilize a patient’s pelvis in the proper position while seated in a wheelchair
Reclining back wheelchair:
type of wheelchair that has a back that can be adjusted from vertical to horizontal and points between
Sacral sitting:
occurs when an individual slouches, sliding the buttocks forward and tilting the pelvis posteriorly
Tilt-in-space wheelchair:
reclining wheelchair that has a fixed seat-to-back angle, even when reclined
