Wheel Alignment Flashcards
List three items of personal safety equipment
personal protective Clothing (PPE) safety glasses and safety boots
What is wheel alignment?
Wheel alignment is the correct relationship of all four wheels of the vehicle
Why is wheel alignment important?
Incorrect wheel alignment will cause tyre wear and also the effect steering of the vehicle
Explain centreline of steering axis?
Steering axis is a line through the ball joints of the steering knuckle on which the steering knuckle turns for steering
What is a ball joint?
In an automobile, ball joints are spherical bearings that connect the control arms to the steering knuckles.
What is the pivot points?
Positivecasterangle. Thepivot pointsof the steering are angled such that a line drawn through them intersects the road surface slightly ahead of the center of the contact patch of the tire on the pavement by a distance called trail. … This is called crosscaster and the difference is called the spread.
Identify the five main angles related to wheel alignment?
- Custer
- Camber
- Steering-axis inclination(SAI)
- Toe(Toe-out and toe-in)
- toe-out-on-turns
What are six steps to adjust the toe on rack and pinion steering?
- Hold the tie rods with one spanner and loosen the lock nut with another
- loosen the clamp on the outer end of the boot or bellows, so that it does not twist when the tie rod is being turned
- turn the tie rods to increase or decrease their length as required both tie rods have right threads (the inner ball joint allows the tie rod to be turned)
- adjust both tie rods by an equal amount
- after completing the adjustment the tighten the locknut
- straighten the boot and tightened the clamp
what are three sets of operations when using wheel alignments?
- pre alignment checks
- setting up the vehicle and/or setting up the equipment on the vehicle
- checking the various angles and making the necessary adjustments
what is meant by the term set back?
misalignment of one front wheel to the opposite wheel
what is meant by the term thrust line?
misalignment of the rear axle to centreline of the vehicle
why is the caster adjusted first?
the sequence starts with the caster because any adjustment of the caster can effect the camber and toe
what is the sequence for carrying out a wheel alignment?
- Caster
- Camber
- Toe
- toe out on turns
list three precautions that should be taken when parking a vehicle during wheel adjustments?
- apply the hand brake
- chock the wheels
- put vehicle in park or neutral
how should the bodywork be protected when checking a vehicle during a wheel alignment?
guard covers
