Q

WIRTYSR: nature as inflicting suffering/the embodiment of suffering:
1. ‘D f t c r’
2. ‘t w o p s’
3. ‘h m t s s, h h f, h b t h’

A
  1. ‘Delivered from the crossway rough’, ‘Delivered from the thorny scourge, delivered from the tossing surge’: anaphoric repetition provides 3 different paths, the path metaphor representing how although there are multiple paths in life, each results in differing yet equally arduous trials and hardships that one must overcome if they wish to achieve spiritual enlightenment. ‘Delivered’ conjures a protective force that has enabled the speaker’s safe traversing and navigating of the world’s complexities, perhaps metaphorically representing the extent of Gods love as he actively provides humanity with shelter from that which can inflict serious suffering i.e. ‘rough…thorny scourge…tossing surge’.
  2. ‘this world of perishable stuff’: evokes the sense that earthly living is unfulfilling and insubstantial, completely unable to provide the necessities required for spiritual growth. The semantics of death of ‘perishable’ suggest earthly living is dictated by a very short time frame => our time on earth will eventually expire 7 so this existence is WHOLLY UNIMPORTANT (at least to the entirely disillusioned speaker).
  3. ‘Here moans the separating sea, here harvests fail, here breaks the heart’: triplet of vastly depressing images littered with failure and decay to reinforce that life on earth provides no opportunity for growth & development = complete fruitlessness of life on earth as earth doesn’t provide a stable, nurturing environment.

sibilance of ‘separating sea’ extends the suffering of the speaker & those who inhabit this clearly tumultuous realm which seems to purposefully inflict pain.

Q

WIR,TYSR:
1. ‘W s n m b t k’
2. ‘p G!’
3. ‘- I i e?’

A
  1. ‘We shrink no more beneath the knife’ : evocative of a discarding of submission to ‘hard work’ as this knife could be a workman’s tool. => metaphorically life’s hardships or literal challenges like illnesses.
  2. Repeated: ‘please God!’: the plaintive mewls of the insignificant speaker to a grand authority figure/deity reflects a desire to escape the the seeming monotony of the incessant trials and tribulations God’s children must face in order to achieve a state of spiritual flourishing.
  3. ‘-is it enough?’: rhetorical question enables a reflection on the continued hardships the speaker has faced across their life & come to a very morbid conclusion that in reality their suffering seems to have no end or purpose, failing to appease a rather sadistic ‘Godly’ figure that delights in the physical, spiritual & mental torture of the speaker. Conjures a rather pleading and weak speaker on the brink of experiencing a loss of spiritual faith.
