List of grievances that each Estate drew up in preparation for the summoning of the Estates-General in 1789 - many demanded new constitution

Third Estate separates and declares themselves as a new body representing great sets proportion of the french people - joined by First Estate two days later, led to the Tennis Court Oath
Tennis Court Oath
Third estate found hall to locked - appeared the king was preventing them from entering = convened in a tennis court in a statement of defiance (led by Mirabeau) and swore a collective oath that France would have a new constitution with or without the king

Called by Louis on the 23rd of June in an attempt to regain control - agreed to abolition of the letters de cachet, freedom of press and new taxation YET refused to accept National Assembly - Third Estate deputies refused to be dismissed, joined by other Estates = Louis forced to legitimise National Assembly (led to Louis using military force to reassert authority)
when Necker invited writers to suggest how the EG should be organised and directed what senior Clergyman was prominent ?

why was the EG system flawed ?
- they counted votes by estate not by head
- 1st and 2nd always held simular views meaning 3rd were outvoted almost every time
What was the Tennis Court Oath?
A pledge made by the members of France’s National Assembly in 1789, in which they vowed to continue meeting until they had drawn up a new constitution
Tensions leading to storming of the Bastille
High bread prices!!, Louis’s dismissal of Necker on 11th July (due to sympathisers with 3rd e) and incited by radical speakers at Palais Royal - turning point when Louis ordered to troops to be moved to Paris and Versailles, causing great anger and alarm

Duc D’orleans and Camille Desmoulines = demonstartions began turning violent = parisisans armed themselvede and attacked customs posts
The parisians demonstraters turned their attention to
bastille = Medieval fort and prison in Paris that was seen as a symbol of despotism and absolute monarchy - also stored significant amount of gunpowder (liberated 7 prisoners when stormed on the 14th July) = became the most enduring symbol of the revolution
