Is it a structural or action theory, why?
Structural - society influences our norms and behaviours as we are passive products of our social system ( puppets on string, top down )
Is it a macro or micro theory?
Macro theory - looks at the social system as a whole and is not interested in small interactions between individuals
Functionalism is a consensus theory, what is meant by this?
they view society as being harmonious ( free from disagreement ) shared norms and values.
What do they called a shared set of norms and values which are all agreed?
Value consensus - they argue this is the foundation of society
What are their views on the education system? do they think it is fair?
they believe the education system is fair and students gain an achieved status gained by their own efforts ( not ascribed which is given at birth )
What word do they use to describe the education system as being equal?
meritocratic , everyone has an equal chance based on ability and effort
What makes the education system meritocratic?
National curriculum
Same exams which equal the same qualifications
How do marxists opose the view of the education system being meritocratic?
Myth of meritocracy and peoples achievement is determined by their social class
