building self concept
Self-concept is a belief about who you are and also involves building self-esteem and self-confidence.

builds self-efficacy = if you have the confidence to partake in a task it helps to ain skills and this increase good level of health
developing connectedness and support network skills
Connectedness is the ability to relate to or feel linked with a person, place, community etc. The process of moving from child to adult is when individuals need to feel a sense of connectedness/belonging.

developing resilience and coping skills
Resilience is successfully adapting to hardship in life, and is about to overcoming personal weakness, difficult circumstances or events. Coping skills allow young people to be self-reliant, to solve problems and make informed choices.
- Ability to cope is influenced by early events and many other factors (age, gender, temperament)
A good resilience and coping skills – allow young people to become less sensitive to risk and more able to cope with physical/emotional demands.
developing health literacy skills
Health literacy is the ability to gain access to, understand and use information in ways which promote and maintain good health.
- Allows young people to choose reliable information, make informed decisions, make positive health choices and learn healthy behaviours.
developing communication skills
Communication skills is being able to articulate thoughts and feelings which allows a person to express themselves which assists in positive mental/emotional health.
- Good communication skills allow YP to be assertive and resist peer pressure and avoid making bad decisions on the road
– Allows young people to communicate thoughts and emotions and helps assist in positive mental health and essential skills for future jobs and life.
- Allows young people to develop, create and maintain healthy, positive and meaningful relationships which includes the ability to effectively resolve/manage conflicts and prevent relationship breakdown/distance.
accessing health services
Health services are necessary in enabling young people to improve their health. If they are aware of services available, their ability to improve their health status is increased.
- If in an accident, YP aware of the services available to them such as counselling/therapy are more able to cope and maintain a good mental health level.
becoming involved in community service
Community service is work done by a person or group of people to benefit others.
creating a sense of future
Young people need to develop the skills to become active citizens. Society needs to provide opportunities for young people to improve their skills and participate in the decision-making process.

Social action is any deliberate activity aimed at enhancing the wellbeing of others and oneself by acting collectively and bringing about change.
In Australia, our society works towards improving the health of its young people in a number of ways:
- Creating supportive environments through strengthening community action can help young people get involved and stay connected by providing opportunities to be involved political and community decision-making.
- Creating supportive environments; for example, improved road designs that dividers oncoming traffic to reduce injuries.
- Ensuring young people are well educated and have opportunities for full employment so their health is not limited by having a low socioeconomic status.
legislation and public policy
The laws, rules and policies of governments, communities and schools that affect young people should improve their safety and well-being, as well as increasing their ability to make positive health-related decisions.
Examples include:
- Road and licencing laws 40km speed limits in school zones
- speed limits on roads
- alcohol and tobacco related laws (lockout laws)
- NSW PDHPE syllabus and mandatory hours of physical activity
health promotion initiatives
Government and non-government health promotion initiatives play a key role in increasing awareness and education, developing skills, and proving support in relation to all health issues that affect young people.
Examples include:
- Mental health: youth beyond blue and headspace
- Alcohol: drink wise and drug info
- Violence: no to violence and bursting the bubble
- Road safety: RYDA Australia and youth safe
