A

Atmosphere was tense- Norman guards mistook a noisy crowd for a riot and set fire to buildings around the abbey

A

Gytha (Harold Godwinson’s mother) had fled to Exeter
She made contact with the Irish and Danes, hoping to gain an army
William tried to negotiate but it failed
William travelled to Exeter when he heard rebellion was brewing and laid waste to the towns of Doset on his way
The people refused to let him enter
William besieged the city, undermining the walls
After 18 days they surrendered

A

He gathered an army and marched to East Anglia
He blocked supplies to the rebels on Ely
He built a causeway and his army used it to reach the island- the english surrendered
Morcar and other leaders were imprisoned and other rebels had their hands cut off and their eyes gouged out
Hereward escaped and carried on resisting the Normans but was never a serious threat
